![]() ![]() ![]() What's most similar is actually the tone, more than the story itself. Now, there are certainly a few shades of Harry Potter obviously, like the cake, but The Ability does not read like a retelling. ![]() After his test, the proctor presents him with a surprise birthday cake. But, thankfully, salvation comes in the form of a test to study at an elite, strange prep school, Myers Holt Academy, which Chris passes with flying colors. He struggles in school, marked as a troublemaker and is finally expelled for a weird incident where he somehow beats up a bully without touching him. Like so many scrappy heroes, everything falls to Chris. The main hero of The Ability is young Christopher Lane, just turning twelve years old and at wit's end for how to take care of himself and his mother, ruined by the death of his father. The Ability is a darker-than-usual middle grade novel with humor and action aplenty. Still, for all that I'm not likely to find something as amazing as Harry Potter is, my middle grade choices have yet to fail me. Perhaps it's because I grew up reading Harry Potter, and am still on the hunt for that elusive book that will mean as much to me, though I know that will likely not happen, because I'm an adult now and less able to appreciate the magic. I am a total sucker for middle grade novels about special schools and kids with powers. ![]()

![]() An expansion of this work opens up opportunities to discuss comics like Under a Jovian Sun (Coker et al. ![]() For music and sounds, there have already been studies, (Austin 2019 Brown 2013) but for lighting, a truly virtual element as there are no technological instruments to map into a découpage unlike in film and theatre, there is very little. ![]() However, this book has aimed to provide an interdisciplinary problematisation of some underlying concepts in comics studies drawing upon film and theatre studies, in doing so it has established those concepts as valuable and workable to comics and will hopefully underpin further discussion about some of the virtual elements of the mise en scène not covered in this book, for example, music, sound and lighting. ![]() ![]() ![]() I thoroughly enjoyed this book, all the more so after having read The Odyssey and The Aneid. Helen is reclaimed and forgiven (but not, perhaps, by the reader) and the Greeks set sail to return to their homes. ![]() The city’s gates are opened from the inside and the returning Greek host sacks and burns and kills until Troy is but a terrible memory. Through deceit and subterfuge, the horse is drawn into the city and Troy’s doom is sure. Finally, when so many heroes on both sides have died, the Greeks feign a retreat and stow away their greatest remaining warriors into the belly of an enormous wooden horse. Through more than a decade the battle rages, calling to its war fields such heroes as Hector and Achilles and Odysseus and Agamemnon, and all the while the Greek gods take sides to lend their aid and their trouble. When the Greek Queen Helen runs away with the Trojan Prince Paris, her husband and his many allies attack the great city in an effort to retrieve her. In brief, this is the classic story of the Trojan War. As a consequence, I will keep my comments to the work at hand and not its far more famous predecessor. ![]() I feel that I must confess off the top that though I have read translations of Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, I have failed as yet to read a literal translation of The Iliad, which leaves me at a loss to compare this to the original. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lyrics Look away, look away Look away, look away This show will wreck your evening, your whole life, and your day Every single episode is nothing but dismay, So look away Look away, look away Just look away, Look away- There's nothing but horror and inconvenience on the way Ask any stable person, "Should I watch?" and they will say: Look away. ![]() In every second part of each book adaptation, Harris sings the song in character as Count Olaf's disguise for that episode, or as Count Olaf himself if he is not in disguise for that episode, while in every first part and in The End, Harris sings in his normal voice with an occasional backup singer helping out. By indoctrinating the Flatlandians to “Attend to your Configuration, ” the Circles maintain power, limiting the freedom of lower polygons and women through oppressive policies and institutions, and immediately suppressing any rebellion through frequent executions. Flatland society is organized from the isosceles triangles at the bottom, then the equilateral triangles, square, pentagons, hexagons, higher polygons, and finally, the priestly circles at the top. While women are simple straight lines, the males are full polygons. In the first half of his treatise, A Square painstakingly describes the social landscape of Flatland, which is strictly regulated by natural laws as dictated by the Circles, the priests that make up the highest class. The narrator and protagonist of Flatland, A Square, writes from prison, intricately detailing the social organization of his country and recounting the revelations he has received from the sacred “Sphere.” Flatland is a world that exists on the two-dimensional plane, where its inhabitants-literal geometrical shapes-live in a highly-structured society organized into classes based on the number of sides of a figure. ![]() ![]() Lois Duncan has written a close-up look at what it is like to experience peer pressure and why you need to say “no”, and that any “friends” who pressure you to do something wrong are not your friends. Griffin, or at least some of them, are good role models, and the ones who did are negative role models but are good because they face consequences for their behavior. The characters who don’t participate in the plot against Mr. Griffin is sort of like a textbook, except it’s fiction (the public libraries categorize it under YA Mystery but it’s not at all a mystery, trust me) about peer pressure and the consequences. I think her books are appropriate for preteens and up, depending on the maturity or sensitivity of the kid. My very first one was They Never Came Home, and Killing Mr. If you have not read Lois Duncan, this is a good one to start with. ![]() But, as we all know, even the best laid plans go wrong. Griffin is about this group of teenage high school students, boys and girls, who have a high school English teacher they don’t like, and decide to give him a good scare so he might not be so strict towards them anymore. This book was one of my first Lois Duncan novels (I have read many more since than) and it left a very good impression on me. ![]() |
